Alexander McCall Smith has written more than sixty books, but is best known for his Ladies' Detective Agency series, which has sold twenty million copies worldwide, been translated into forty-five languages, and appeared on a number of world bestseller lists. The Sunday Philosophy Club, a series about a young woman named Isabel Dalhousie, quickly became a bestseller as well. In addition to his success as a writer, McCall Smith has also served as professor of medical law at the University of Edinburgh, and he has established a law school at the University of Botswana. McCall Smith has served as a vice-chairman on the Human Genetics Commission of the UK and as the chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee.
